How does one extend a safety gate?

Extension of safety grids

Do you need to use your safety gate in a new location, but the safety gate does not fit because the new opening is wider? You can solve this issue by extending your safety gate by buying extenders. That means that you do not have to invest in a whole new safety gate.

However, please note that there are differences between the extenders for pressure mounted safety gates and wall mounted ones. You also need to keep in mind that some of the safety gates cannot be extended. Read on below and learn how to extend your safety gate.

What type of safety gates can be extended?

When you want to extend your safety gate, remember to keep in mind what type of safety gate you are using. This is because there are different types of extenders for either wall mounted or pressure mounted safety gates. Some safety gates can also be extended more than others.

Wall mounted safety gates are typically those that you can extend by the most. All BabyDan Flex and BabyDan OLAF safety gates can, practically speaking, be extended indefinitely. You use the BabyDan extender sections to extend a BabyDan Flex or BabyDan OLAF safety gate.

Pressure mounted safety gates cannot be extended as much as wall mounted ones. However, you can extend pressure mounted gates by using BabyDan Extend a Gate extenders.

Therefore, it is important that you check if it is even possible to extend your safety gate - because some of BabyDan’s safety gates do not have that feature. The following safety gates CANNOT be extended:

  • EBBA
  • ELIN
  • FlexiFit
  • LENA
  • LIVA
  • MultiDan
  • No Trip
  • Saga

If you have one of the safety gates below, you cannot extend it.

How to extend your safety gate

When you need to extend your safety gate, you have to use extenders. However, remember to follow the steps below to be sure that you are choosing the right kind of extender(s) for your particular safety gate:

1. What type of safety gate do you have? Is it a pressure mounted or wall mounted safety gate?

It is important that you choose an extender that matches the type of safety gate that you have. If you have a pressure mounted safety gate, you can use a BabyDan Extend a Gate and a BabyDan extension panel to make it longer. If, however, you have a wall mounted safety gate, then you have to use the BabyDan extender sections, Extend BabyDan ALMA or BabyDan Extend A Guard. Read more below to get more help in figuring out which types of extenders you should use.

2. By how much do you want to extend your safety gate?

How wide is the opening that you want to install the safety gate at? Once you know that, you can calculate how many extenders you will need. It varies a lot how much the different types of extenders extend the width of the safety gate.

3. Will you need to use wall fittings when adding extenders?

You need to use wall fittings to some of the pressure mounted safety gates if you extend it using more than a certain number of extenders. This is to ensure that the safety gate is as stable as possible.

How to extend a pressure mounted safety gate

When you want to extend a pressure mounted safety gate, you can choose between two different types of extenders: BabyDan Extend A Gate and BabyDan Extension Panel.

BabyDan Extend A Gate can be used for pressure mounted safety gates and comes in packs of one or two extenders. In terms of colours, they all come in white, black and silver versions.

All pressure mounted safety gates can be extended with at least 1 BabyDan Extend A Gate extender. Each extender increases the width of the safety gate by approximately 7 cm.

Please note that if you have a BabyDan Premier, BabyDan Avantgarde, BabyDan ASTA or BabyDan TORA, you can extend the safety gates by up to 3 BabyDan Extend A Gate extenders on each side of the safety gate’s door. If you are using three extenders, it is important that you use wall fittings.

If you have a BabyDan Danamic, BabyDan DesignerGate or BabyDan MAJA, you can extend the safety gate by up to 3 BabyDan Extend A Gate extenders. Here it is important that you use wall fittings if you use more than one extender.

You have to use the BabyDan extender panel if you want to extend a BabyDan ASTRA extra wide 151 cm or a BabyDan ASTA extra wide 183 cm. The extender panel comes in sizes of either 32 cm or 64.5 cm.

How to extend a wall mounted safety gate

When you want to extend a wall mounted safety gate, you can choose between two different types of extenders: Extend A Guard and Extend BabyDan ALMA.

The BabyDan extender sections work with all BabyDan OLAF and BabyDan Flex safety gates. They come in two different sizes, 33 cm and 72 cm, and in both black or white.

You must use the Extend BabyDan ALMA for the BabyDan ALMA safety gate. That can extend the safety gate by up to 24 cm.

Extend A Guard is used for the BabyDan Guard Me safety gate. That can extend the safety gate by up to 24 cm.

What do you do if you need a safety gate to fit an opening between two sizes of safety gates?

Are you wondering “Hey, where is the safety gate for a measurement somewhere between a 151 cm BabyDan ASTA extra wide and a 183 cm BabyDan ASTA extra wide?” - The answer is: use extenders!

You have to use extenders to cover the space between two sizes of safety gates, such as, for example, for openings between the 151 cm BabyDan ASTA extra wide and the 183 cm BabyDan ASTA extra wide.

If, for example, you want a safety gate that can cover an opening of between 151.8 - 177.8 cm, you can use extenders for the safety gate. You must use BabyDan Extend A Gate and Extender for BabyDan ASTA & BabyDan Premier for a 151 cm BabyDan ASTA extra wide and a 151 cm BabyDan Premier extra wide.

Remember, you can always use up to 3 BabyDan Extend A Gate pieces on each side of the safety gate’s door, but you can only have one Extender BabyDan ASTA & BabyDan Premier on each side of the door.
